Signed by Fidel: Castro Autographing Humidors

By , posted Friday, February 23, 2007

Fidel Castro has been the subject of endless headlines speculating that the former Cuban leader is not long for this mortal coil. Perhaps in a bid to silence the critics, news broke recently that Castro would be signing a collection of humidors to be auctioned at the Habanos Festival in Cuba, which begins next week.

Castro has signed the humidors in the past, adding considerably to the value of the items, many of which have extremely creative designs. At the 1999 dinner, for example, a Castro-signed humidor that resembled a street scene from the Cuban town of Trinidad, complete with a tower and buildings, sold for $100,000 to the actor Billy Zane. Others have been made to look like pyramids, sculptures from Easter Island and even something akin to the Terminator robot popularized by Arnold Schwarzenegger. To read about this year's festival, follow the blog of European Editor James Suckling coming soon to Cigar Aficionado Online.
